Over the years, there has been a variety of defining words meant to be Oceti Sakowin Confederation. Ultimately, it is a body held together by wartime memories of a loving people and proud nation. A Treaty doesn’t mean peace, It means a cease fire. During the past 225 years, there were offices that were supposed to have provided for our every need of the time in civilized territories, with equity being of a high value for its time for each member of the nations protected by a cease fire agreement, that had dishonest hands when managing those positions. As time went on, those “Agents” of the crown, whether it was by the church, military or public officials; became responsible for the misrepresention of our will. 

Oceti Sakowin Confederation has become the meaning of what a “Stronghold” means to the people. There have been many struggles and pit-falls over the 150 years since the Battle of Little Big Horn. When we hear the name “Greasy Grass”, or “Battle of Little Big Horn” or the name “Custer”, the story becomes all there is. Our hearts hold in place for this Stronghold, The Last War of the Warpath People. 

For 150 years, there have been many evolutions as to what it meant to be of the Warriors of the Plains. We have evolved from where we wanted to be against our will. Not being able to go back to the Buffalo and the Way of the Warpath has left our Warrior Nation half empty inside. Only in glimpses, do we see the water, the land, the streams, life on the land the way we remember in the stories. It’s the old stories that keep the wonder in our eyes still. The old way of “The Hunt” and “The Warpath”. 

As a Warrior Nation on the path of Revival, the path forward must be as it was paved, with Honor in our Hearts. The rite of passage for all warriors has changed. There are new ways for a Young Warrior to prove himself to his people. The opportunity to perform good deeds and acquire new skills along the way to help the people is in high demand among The Oceti Sakowin Confederation. 

The Future of Oceti Sakowin Confederation is full of promise. 

This promise holds many exciting paths for the people. As a People of Many Walks of Life, knowing more than one language will help with expressing our Unique and Independent Agencies in Oceti Sakowin to the world. Expressing these independent agencies is important when expressing independence and self-determination. Many tribes were forced to co-mingle on reservations while learning English as a forced condition. Many nations belong to Oceti Sakowin Confederation by War. 

Thus, the Ultimate Vision of Oceti Sakowin Confederation; Return To The Black Hills. How? All Lands Are Held In Fee Simple. The Lands Were Never Sold. The substantial nature of the Supreme Court Decision in 1980 to Settle for a Penal Sum and Announce the Black Hills were NEVER SOLD.  

The Agencies of the People are evolving with Contract Law and Trade Agreements and their new Administrative Duties. Some of these difficulties are highly mendable with the right functions at work. These functions include proper administration of the Trust Duties of The Peoples Agencies, as they may differ from one community to another.

It begins with the people themselves: our families, our elders, our children, our names, our language, our history, our land, and the relationships that have held us together through war, peace, trade, hardship, change, and survival. 

That means keeping better records, understanding our agreements, protecting land, helping families, building capable agencies, creating economic opportunity, teaching our young people, and making sure the knowledge held by one generation does not disappear with them. It also means knowing how to move in the modern world without forgetting when to put the modern world down. We can use law, technology, finance, administration, archives, and trade while still knowing where we come from and what those tools are supposed to serve. OSC is about bringing those things back together, helping our people find one another, strengthening our homes and communities, and carrying the memory forward in a way that our children can actually live.
